Phuket Island - Background and Lifestyle

Phuket Island resorts and locations
Phuket has become Thailand’s ultimate beach resort destination, offering outstanding holidays in a range of world-class hotels, resorts and villas. Nearby Koh Samui has been largely spoilt by a lack of planning and supporting infrastructure, such as sufficient roads to accommodate the volume of traffic while Pattaya has suffered from its reputation as the sex capital of Thailand. Krabi is growing in popularity but is still largely undeveloped. For a beach holiday, Phuket offers outstanding quality and value, with its miles of beaches and ocean frontage.

Lifestyle

Phuket offers the finest in golf, nightlife, boating, and a myriad of water-related pursuits.

Among Phuket’s world-class golf courses are the Laguna Phuket Golf Club, Mission Hills Golf Resort & Country Club, Blue Canyon Country Club and Phuket Country Club. Phuket’s beaches and environs offer some of the best diving and snorkelling in Southeast Asia, if not the world.

Phuket supports great dining, with many outstanding restaurants serving local and international cuisine often prepared by some of the world’s best chefs. When it comes to nightlife, Phuket cannot be beat. The island, already on the international map has an entertainment hotspot, is a magnet for some of the best DJ and nightclub talent from around the globe, drawn by the island’s cachet. Whether you seek a relaxing place on a quiet beach to enjoy sundowners or if you want to really party, party, party! Phuket has it all. Phuket also offers a wide variety of shopping experiences, from local night markets to upscale shopping malls located centrally on the island.

Bangkok Phuket Hospital offers the finest in medical services for those seeking to take advantage of the region’s growing medical tourism industry. Above all, Phuket offers an unmatchable holiday at a fraction of its European competitors cost.

Geography

Phuket is Thailand's largest island. The west coast has beautiful bays with white sandy beaches stretching down the coast. The east coast, with fewer beaches, offers stunning views and easy access to Phang Nga Bay, where hundreds of islands offer some of Asia’s best beaches. Southern Phuket offers several beaches, but is better known for its headlands and bluffs that offer beautiful sea views.

The island of Phuket protects Phang Nga bay, which dwells between the island and the Thai mainland to the east. Phang Nga bay is famous for its remarkable limestone karst formations that can only be found in a few places around the world. Phang Nga bay and Phi Phi Islands are popular tourist destinations for day trips and diving for those based on Phuket. To the east of Phuket is Krabi, on the eastern shore of the bay, on the mainland of Thailand.

Phuket is a hilly island, with a low range running down the centre and headlands separating each of the bays on its west side. Waterfalls, lush vegetation, sea views and of course the limestone karsts all add to the interesting topography of Phuket, and make it a wonderful island to explore.

WeatherPhuket Weather and lifestyle

Phuket has a balmy tropical climate, with its best weather during the European winter.

The island has a fairly consistent temperature all year round, with lows in the mid-20s (Celsius) and peak temperatures into the mid-30s. March and April are the hottest months, while November through January is the coolest time of year.

There are two distinct seasons that shift with the direction of the monsoons. The north-east monsoon season, from November through March, brings cooler breezes and sunny, dry days. The wet south-west monsoon season runs from May through October.

Dry season - November to March

Phuket’s weather is at its best when the dry season starts in November and temperatures and humidity levels drop, making it ideal for sipping cocktails in the shade of beach umbrellas. There may be an occasional shower, but these rarely last more than an hour.

From December through February, rainfall drops to about 40mm per month. March remains dry, but it begins to feel hotter and more humid.

Summer - April to October

From April to October, the weather in Phuket can be wet. April is the steamiest month, with daytime temperatures around 40 degrees and frequent but brief rain showers.

Rainfall is heavier from May through August, but the storms are often quick to pass and there are still many sunny days during these months. In many ways it is the best time of year to visit, the beaches are virtually empty and villa rental rates are lower. The odd rain shower is often just a welcome breather from the heat.

Get your umbrella out for September and October, there is an average rainfall of more than 300mm per month.
